Balikbaoyan is a restaurant branding project from my Special Studies class, combining my Chinese and Filipino heritage. Given the rich diversity of both cuisines and their deep cultural significance, I aimed to create a brand that blended these traditions with a modern twist. The design draws from Mindanao textile patterns and vintage Hong Kong phone books.
Filipino fabric patterns inspired the branding’s borders, color palettes, and typography, while the menu layout mimicked the structured, clustered style of 1980s Hong Kong advertisements. The restaurant’s name, “Balikbaoyan,” merges Balikbayan—a care package sent to loved ones—with Bao, a traditional Chinese steamed bun. Both symbolize love, connection, and cultural heritage, embodying the fusion of these two culinary identities.
Inspired by the vintage photography that consisted within Hong Kong advertisements, I wanted to replicate the vintage aesthetics by creating a risoprint effect on the photos.
